Background of The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf
Founded in 1968, the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf is the oldest non-profit organization serving the hearing-impaired community in Hong Kong. It aims to provide relevant education, recreation, counselling, employment, social support, audiological, and medical services.
We have over 7,000 members and we continue to provide comprehensive and professional services for the hearing impaired society with aims to ensure equal opportunities for the hearing impaired, to realise their potentials and to promote self-actualization and smooth integration into the society.
Be The Pioneer, and to Serve
The Hong Kong first restaurant, following the principles of social enterprise and operated by the hearing impaired, namely Deaf Cafeteria, was opened and came into operation at the Lion's Nature Education Centre in Sai Kung.
The first ever multi-channel cochlear implant surgery for a severe hearing impaired child in Hong Kong was performed.
A precedential first multi-channel cochlear implant surgery for a severe hearing impaired adult in Hong Kong was performed.
With the authorization from John Tracy Clinic from the United States, the world's first * free Distance Learning Speech & Hearing Correspondence Course, (in Chinese) for parents was launched.
The first Audiometric Screening Van in Hong Kong came into service for the general public.
The first Special Child Care Nursery (Ho Man Tin) for hearing impaired children in Hong Kong was opened.
The first non-government operated Audiological and Technical Service Centre (Ho Man Tin) in Hong Kong was established.
The first Scholarship with an aim to provide financial support for hearing impaired students to pursue local and overseas further post-secondary education was launched - T.M Gregory Memorial Scholarship Fund.
