International Day of Disabled Persons 2009

Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities announced that this year’s International Day of Disabled Persons will be celebrated on 27 Nov. Disabled persons are used to enjoy a free-ride day in major Hong Kong transportation and free use of culture and recreational facilities under Leisure & Culture Services Department by using a free-ride card issued by Hong Kong Joint Council for People with Disabilities (picture on the left). But a new policy is also announced: No more free-ride card will be issued for disabled person and instead it will be replaced by “Registration Cards (new card with photo of cardholder) for the Disabled”, issued by Central Registry for Rehabilitation of Labour and Welfare Bureau(Issued by Health, Welfare & Food Bureau before reorganization of Government structure at July 1 2007) . Therefore, our deaf members will not receive free-ride cards this year. Due to renovation work in progress until mid December, Hong Kong Centre’s temporary office is open at Room 706, Technology Plaza, No. 651 King’s Road, North Point.

Opening time of temporary office:

Monday to Friday: 10am – 7pm (Lunch time 1pm - 2pm)
Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays: Closed
Telephone & Fax No. are remain unchanged. Temporary office only provides general enquiries, activities enrollment and sales of batteries services.

5. To appoint an Honorary Legal Advisor for 2009/10

Renew your membership

Your 2007-08 membership has already expired on 31 March 2008. To renew your membership for year 2008-2009, you can come to our Head Office, Hong Kong Centre, Kowloon Centre, TKO Centre or NT Centre in person or apply via mail by using the mailing renewal form. If you wish to receive newsletter in May, please complete your application procedure on or before 12 April.

Staff Fund raising result of our regional flag day
for Parents Resource Centre

The Society’s regional flag day has been held on 22 December 2007 and until February 2008, a sum of $970,000 was raised. Once again we would like to show our appreciation to all volunteers, members and agencies for your generous support to our Parents Resource Centre. A special thanks to volunteers, member and staff who have joined the Gold Flag Ambassadors Scheme, as well as to the agencies joining the Charity Company/Campus Gold Flag Sales. Renewal of registration cards for the disabled
News from Government's website, holders of registration cards for the disabled, which do not feature the person's photograph, are reminded to apply for new cards. Health, Welfare & Food Bureau announced that all old cards will be invalid next March, 2008.

Holders of cards issued in 2003, 2004 and 2005 will receive notification for card renewal by post in May. For those who have received the notification but have yet to act, they are reminded to renew their cards by October.

2007-2008 Government Budget: Additional Social Welfare Assistance (1-3-2007)
To share the fruits of economic prosperity with recipients of CSSA and Social Security Allowance (SSA), Financial Secretary Henry Tang Yin-yen proposed to provide one additional month of standard rate CSSA payments for CSSA recipients and one additional month of allowance for SSA recipients.

This proposal will benefit over a million people and cost the Government about $1.5 billion in 2007–08.
