About Deaf Cafeteria

Deaf Cafeteria, the first of its kind manned by hearing-impaired persons in Hong Kong, has been in operation for over ten years since June 1995. Deaf Cafeteria is a social enterprise which re-integrates the hearing-impaired people (the disadvantaged group) into the labour market through the provision of services.

The Cafeteria provides employment opportunities with wages at market level. It also serves as a workshop providing supported employment and on- the-job training services to hearing-impaired persons for subsequent employment in open market. By expanding outside catering service and strengthening barrier-free communication, the Cafeteria promotes the concept of integration.

Development

In the early 80¡¦s, the Society had learnt about the success of the Manila coffee Shop at Philippines which was run by hearing-impaired people. The experience in Philippines urged the Society to plan for a similar cafe in Hong Kong. Finally in 1995, the business was started at the Lions Nature Education Centre in Sai Kung.

After five years of operation, a new Cafeteria was set up in Lam Tin in 2000, serving patients with special need in diets by specially designed menus.

Operations

The Cafeteria provides comprehensive training programmes. In addition to acquiring different cooking skills, trainees are equipped with interpersonal skills training, positive working attitudes, occupation safety and food hygiene knowledge.

The Cafeteria developed the outside catering service. High acclaims from government departments, welfare agencies and commercial companies are earned. This helps the community better understand the characteristics and working abilities of hearing-impaired. In return, our staff became more confident to work independently

After training, most of our trainees obtained employment openly and some of them have participated in the catering service. Their training and working experiences are recognized by their employers.

Barrier-free communication

To promote ¡§barrier-free communication¡¨, hearing-impaired staff adopted various ways to enhance two-way communication with customers such as displayed sign language pictures and compiled food albums. All these means help to enhance the interaction and communication between the public and hearing-impaired persons and thus, actualize the concept of integration.

The cafeteria provides fast food ranging from snacks and drinks to set meals. Group reservations are also welcome. Advance booking is required for buffet and outside catering service.

In short, the Cafeteria succeeds in being a good example of social enterprise. The hearing-impaired persons have equal chance to participate in productive and gainful employment in the open market. We strive to develop our business to help more hearing-impaired persons in the future.
