With an aim to promoting the integration of hearing impaired persons into the society at large, the Hong Kong Society for the Deaf has launched a territory-wide project, named, “The Great Wall of Ears” project in 2008, with the support of “Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged” and other business partners. The project promotes the public awareness on the need of hearing impaired persons.
From 2008, the Society has conducted a series of public education talks and seminars for primary and secondary school students, a photography competition and a special photo collection activity called “Great Wall of Ears”.
To raise public’s awareness of the needs of hearing impaired persons, the Society launched a project, “Great Wall of Ears” Photo Collection Activity. We invited people of Hong Kong to send photographs of their ears to us. These ear photos represent those with a “caring and listening ear” to the need of hearing impaired persons. 65 groups (include primary schools, secondary schools, companies, NGOs, companies) participated in the project. Meanwhile, the Society also set up street collection points in different districts (Quarry Bay, North Point, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok & Tuen Mun) to collect ear photos.
After a year’s time, 13,221 ear photos were received and they were used to “build up” a 104-metre long “Great Wall of Ears”. The huge artwork was exhibited in the “Great Wall of Ears” carnival (「萬耳長城 聾健共融」嘉年華.)

The “Great Wall of Ears” carnival was held on 15 February 2009 at La Salle College. The Society was honor to have Mr. Stephen Fisher, Director of Social Welfare, Prof Mok Bong Ho , Advisory Committee of the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged, Ms. Christine Fang M. S., Chief Executive of HK Council of Social Service Dr. Ferrick Chu C. M., Head of Policy & Research Unit of Equal Opportunities Commission, together with Mr. Philip Lee Chairman and Mrs. Winnie Wong Director as our Officiating Guests at the ceremony

Two TVB artists (徐子珊及高鈞賢) were appointed as the ambassadors of the event. Both artists have taken roles in a TV drama depicting a life story of a hearing impaired woman. They encouraged the audience to have an open mind to get along with hearing impaired persons. They also taught the audience to how to “say” the event’s slogan “Together we build the Great Wall of Ears, and create an integrated society”(共建萬耳長城 同創共融社會) with sign language. The ceremony was ended when our officiating guests, council members, project partners and artists signed the slogan with all the audience.

In addition to the display of the 104 meters long “Great Wall of Ears”, there were other programs promoting the theme of understanding hearing impaired persons and social integration. The Carnival was well received by 1,500 guests, participants and volunteers from all walks of life.
